The Science Behind Vitals

We did not guess at what works. We built Vitals around decades of real research so your dog gets the ingredients that are actually proven to make a difference.

Why We Built Vitals

Most dog owners want to do the right thing for their dog's health. But walking into a pet store and seeing thirty different supplements on the shelf — each one promising something different — is overwhelming. A probiotic here. A coat supplement there. An immune booster on the other side.

The truth is, most of these supplements are targeting the same underlying systems in your dog's body. And the research shows that when you support those systems together — rather than one at a time — the results are dramatically better.

That is why we built Vitals around three core ingredients that work together to support eight different areas of your dog's health. Not because we wanted to make a big claim. Because the science told us to.

The Science Behind Turkey Tail Mushroom

Turkey Tail mushroom (Trametes versicolor) is one of the most studied natural immune compounds in the world. It has been used in traditional medicine for thousands of years but in the last few decades scientists have started to understand exactly why it works so well.

The two key compounds in Turkey Tail are called PSK (Polysaccharide-K) and PSP (Polysaccharide-P). These are beta-glucan compounds — a type of natural sugar molecule — that bind directly to receptors on your dog's immune cells and trigger a stronger immune response.

In plain terms: PSK and PSP are like a signal that wakes up your dog's immune system and tells it to get to work.

What the research shows:

A landmark study published in the journal Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine found that Turkey Tail extract significantly extended survival times in dogs with hemangiosarcoma, one of the most aggressive cancers in dogs. The University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine conducted this trial and found that dogs receiving the highest dose of Turkey Tail had a median survival time of 199 days compared to 86 days in the control group. This was one of the first studies to demonstrate the direct immune-activating effect of Turkey Tail in dogs specifically.

A study published in the Journal of Nutrition found that PSK from Turkey Tail stimulated natural killer cell activity — the immune cells responsible for identifying and destroying harmful pathogens and abnormal cells — by up to 40 percent in tested subjects.

Research published in Frontiers in Pharmacology confirmed that the beta-glucans in Turkey Tail can modulate the immune system in both directions — activating it when it is underperforming and calming it when it is overreacting. This dual action is why Turkey Tail is particularly effective for dogs with seasonal allergies, where an overactive immune response is the root cause of symptoms.

A review published in the International Journal of Medicinal Mushrooms found that Turkey Tail's PSP compounds demonstrated significant antioxidant activity, helping to neutralise the free radicals that accelerate aging and cellular damage in dogs.

The Science Behind Reishi Mushroom

Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum) has been called the mushroom of immortality in traditional Chinese medicine for over 2,000 years. Modern science has now confirmed what traditional healers always knew — Reishi is one of the most powerful adaptogens and longevity compounds ever studied.

An adaptogen is a natural substance that helps the body adapt to stress and maintain balance. For dogs this means Reishi works whether your dog is anxious, overworked, aging, or just needs daily support to stay resilient.

What the research shows:

A study published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology found that Reishi extract significantly reduced cortisol levels — the primary stress hormone — in tested subjects, with effects comparable to conventional anti-anxiety interventions. Cortisol is the same hormone that spikes when your dog is stressed, anxious, or overwhelmed. Chronically elevated cortisol suppresses the immune system, disrupts gut health and accelerates aging.

Research published in Phytomedicine demonstrated that Reishi's active compounds, called triterpenoids and polysaccharides, showed significant anti-inflammatory activity by inhibiting the same inflammatory pathways that cause chronic pain and discomfort in aging dogs.

A review of 34 studies on Reishi published in Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews found consistent evidence of immune system enhancement across multiple tested populations, including stimulation of T-cells and B-cells — the two primary immune cell types responsible for recognising and fighting infection.

Research published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry found that Reishi polysaccharides demonstrated significant anti-aging effects by protecting cells from oxidative stress and extending cellular lifespan in tested subjects. This is the biological foundation behind Reishi's reputation as a longevity compound.

A study in Food and Chemical Toxicology found that Reishi supplementation led to measurable improvements in energy metabolism at the cellular level, explaining why dogs on daily Reishi support often show improved energy levels and physical endurance.

The Science Behind Probiotics

Lactobacillus Acidophilus is one of the most studied probiotic strains in the world. It is a naturally occurring beneficial bacteria that lives in your dog's gut and plays a critical role in almost every aspect of their health — far beyond just digestion.

Most people think of probiotics as a gut supplement. But the research shows that the gut is connected to almost everything — immune function, skin health, coat quality, energy levels, mood and even brain function. Scientists now call the gut the second brain, and for good reason.

What the research shows:

A study published in the Journal of Animal Science found that Lactobacillus Acidophilus supplementation in dogs significantly improved stool quality, reduced digestive upset and increased the population of beneficial gut bacteria while reducing harmful bacteria within four weeks of daily supplementation.

Research published in Veterinary Microbiology demonstrated that probiotic supplementation including Lactobacillus strains significantly enhanced immune response in dogs, with measurable increases in immunoglobulin A (IgA) — one of the body's primary immune defence compounds — within 30 days.

A study published in the Journal of Nutrition found that the gut microbiome directly influences the severity of allergic responses in dogs. Dogs with a more diverse and balanced gut microbiome showed significantly lower inflammatory responses to common allergens, explaining the connection between gut health and seasonal allergy relief.

Research in Veterinary Dermatology found that dogs supplemented with Lactobacillus strains showed significant improvements in coat quality, skin hydration and reduced skin inflammation within eight weeks, directly demonstrating the gut-skin connection.

A study published in Frontiers in Veterinary Science found that probiotic supplementation in senior dogs led to measurable improvements in energy levels and physical activity, linked to improved nutrient absorption and reduced systemic inflammation from a healthier gut environment.

The Gut-Immune Connection

This is the most important thing to understand about your dog's health and it is also the thing most supplement brands never talk about.

Approximately 70 percent of your dog's immune system lives in their gut. Not in their bloodstream. Not in their organs. In their gut.

The gut is lined with billions of immune cells that are constantly sampling everything that passes through and deciding what is safe and what is a threat. When the gut is healthy and balanced those immune cells work perfectly. When the gut is out of balance — through stress, processed food, antibiotics or age — the immune system weakens with it.

This is why a dog with gut problems often also has skin problems. And why a dog with a weak immune system often also has low energy. And why a dog with seasonal allergies often also has digestive issues. These are not four separate problems. They are four symptoms of the same underlying imbalance in the gut-immune axis.

Vitals targets this root cause directly. Turkey Tail activates the immune cells. Reishi reduces the cortisol that suppresses them. Lactobacillus Acidophilus restores the gut environment where those immune cells live and work. Three ingredients. One system. Eight benefits.

Why 8 Supplements in One

Most dog owners who care about their dog's health end up buying multiple supplements. A probiotic for digestion. An immune booster for winter. A calming supplement for anxiety. A coat supplement for shedding. An energy supplement for older dogs.

Here is the problem with that approach:

First, it is expensive. Buying eight separate supplements could cost you $150 to $200 per month or more.

Second, it is inconsistent. When you are managing eight different products with different dosing schedules and formats it is easy to miss days, which means your dog never gets a consistent enough dose for the ingredients to actually work.

Third and most importantly, it misses the point. These eight areas of health are not separate systems. They are all connected through the gut-immune axis. Treating them separately with individual supplements is like trying to fix a leaking roof by mopping the floor.

Vitals works because it targets the root system — the gut-immune axis — with three clinically studied ingredients that together support all eight areas simultaneously and consistently, in one daily scoop that costs a fraction of buying everything separately.

The comparison:

Individual supplements you would otherwise need:

  • General immune booster — $20 to $30 per month
  • Probiotic supplement — $20 to $30 per month
  • Allergy support supplement — $20 to $25 per month
  • Calming adaptogen supplement — $20 to $30 per month
  • Energy and vitality supplement — $15 to $25 per month
  • Coat health supplement — $15 to $20 per month
  • Skin health supplement — $15 to $20 per month
  • Anti-aging supplement — $20 to $30 per month

Total: $145 to $210 per month

Vitals: from $29 per month

How It All Works Together

Here is the simple version of how Vitals works inside your dog's body every single day:

You mix one scoop into your dog's food in the morning. Within minutes the three active ingredients begin working their way through your dog's digestive system.

The Lactobacillus Acidophilus reaches the gut and begins restoring the balance of beneficial bacteria. A healthier gut means better nutrient absorption, calmer digestion, less inflammation and a stronger foundation for everything else.

The Turkey Tail mushroom compounds reach the immune cells lining the gut wall and activate them — increasing their ability to identify and fight pathogens, modulate allergic responses and protect against cellular damage from free radicals.

The Reishi compounds work on the adrenal system, reducing cortisol production and helping your dog's body stay in a calm and resilient state rather than a stressed and suppressed one.

Over days and weeks these three actions compound. The gut gets healthier. The immune system gets stronger. Cortisol stays lower. Energy improves. The coat gets shinier. Skin gets calmer. Recovery from illness gets faster.

This is not a supplement that masks symptoms. It is a daily system that improves the underlying health of your dog from the inside out.
